Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

What is the origin of Social and Emotional Learning?

The Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is the self-appointed creator of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). CASEL is a non-profit organization supported by donations from organizations including The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, CHAN Zuckerberg Initiative, Fetzer Institute, and Patrick J McGovern Foundation to name a few.

What is SEL?

As defined on CASEL’s website: “SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge skills and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”

The core competencies of SEL according to it’s creator, CASEL:

The CASEL video above is evidence that SEL goes far beyond teaching academics. In their own own words, it is designed to “influence behaviors and beliefs”; “manage emotions, thoughts and actions in difficult situations to achieve individual and collective goals”; “…learn to take different perspectives and learn to empathize, even with people who are different from us”; “analyzing the impact of our actions on ourselves and others and identifying solutions that support our collective well-being.”

PARENTS! In an obscenely-funded industrial educational complex, where average reading and math scores are below proficiency, do we really want our educators dictating our children’s values and beliefs? Who defines collective goals, and responsible and caring decisions? The same people who insisted on depriving our children from attending school are now citing mental health harms to justify providing mental health and counseling in public schools. Do you really want teachers, who are not trained in mental health, engaging in very personal and complex issues with your children? This is downright dangerous.
